Auto roles for Discord, given the moment members join

Koya is an auto role bot for Discord. When someone joins your server, it adds the roles you chose, or removes them, without anyone lifting a finger. Each auto role can target everyone, humans only or bots only, wait a delay before applying, and drop itself once the member gets another role. The free plan covers 3 auto roles, Premium 20 and Pro is unlimited. Set them up from the dashboard or with the /autorole command.

  • Roles given or removed as soon as a member joins
  • Separate rules for humans and bots
  • Optional delay, up to 30 days
  • Remove a starter role once the member gets another one
  • Set up from the dashboard or with /autorole

The settings of an auto role

The preview above shows a member right after joining, then 10 minutes later. Each auto role combines four settings:

  • Type: add the role to the new member, or remove it.
  • Members: everyone, humans only or bots only, so bots never get your community roles.
  • Delay: apply the role right away or after a wait, from a few seconds up to 30 days.
  • Remove on new role: take the auto role away as soon as the member receives any other role.

In the preview, Member is given right away and Newcomer is set to be removed on a new role. Verified comes 10 minutes later, and since it is a new role, Newcomer goes away at the same moment.

Example setups

A few combinations, and how to build each one:

A base role for everyoneMemberAddHumansNoneNo
Keep bots apartBotsAddBotsNoneNo
A starter role until members pick rolesNewcomerAddHumansNoneYes

For the starter role, let members pick their own roles next, for example with reaction roles: the first role they pick removes Newcomer.

Set up auto roles in three steps

From the dashboard or from Discord, whichever you prefer.

  1. Add Koya to your Discord server.
  2. In the dashboard, open Auto Roles and create an auto role, or run /autorole add in your server.
  3. Pick the role, then the type, the members it applies to, an optional delay and whether to remove it on a new role.

Koya needs the Manage Roles permission, and its highest role must sit above the roles it gives. The dashboard warns you when either is missing. Changes made by auto roles appear in Discord's audit log, with "Auto Role" in the reason. Use /autorole list to review them and /autorole remove to delete one.

Free, Premium and Pro for auto roles

Auto roles handle the first seconds of a member's stay. Greet them in a channel or by DM with welcome messages and cards, then let them choose the rest with reaction roles.

FAQ

Is the auto role bot free?

Yes. The free plan covers 3 auto roles with every setting: type, members, delay and remove on new role. Premium raises it to 20 auto roles and Pro is unlimited.

Can I give bots a different role?

Yes. Set Members to Bots on one auto role and to Humans on another, so bots and people each get their own roles.

Can the role be given after a delay?

Yes. Set a delay from a few seconds up to 30 days, for example 10 minutes before a member gets access to the whole server.

Does it give roles to members who were already in the server?

No. Auto roles apply to members who join after you set them up. Existing members keep the roles they have.

Can Koya remove a role automatically?

Yes, in two ways: an auto role of type Remove takes a role away when the member joins, and Remove on new role takes the auto role away once the member gets any other role.

Why didn't Koya give the role?

Check two things: Koya has the Manage Roles permission, and its highest role is above the role it should give. The dashboard shows a warning when one of them is missing.
